inspection time
Inspections of the basement work came today. I think they went well. I'll find out more tonight.
Contractor is now suggesting that the big hole in my yard get bigger and that they do a full doorway into the basement!! Now, I've always wanted a door there, but we simply can't afford this kind of extra cost at this time... Anyone want to chip in to get a door installed?
Here is a picture of our kitchen... primed and almost ready for hardwood floors:
They've also dropped in the bathtub. See, isn't it exciting :)

See if they will install a fireman's pole instead of a door, that's probably cheaper than the door. Oh, and a trampoline for getting back out. But then how would you get in without being bounced back out? I'm sure there's a building code for this somewhere.
I always thought walkdown stairways to basement doors were nasty. They typically get filled with leaves and bugs. The drains get backed up and they flood your basement. The cool part is that you sometimes get frogs... (Brian)
Outside walkdown stairs very good and very bad simultaneously. It is obviously convenient for getting stuff in and out but (as Brian said) the drain backs up and they flood... it's a very tough call. If you hain't had it before you're probably better off forgoing it.
If they don't put a door in, how are you going to get in and out of the basement? Access could be problematic. Seriously, though, walkdown stairways can be kept up pretty well, but you might want to consider putting in an 8-inch concrete slab at the base of the door. It is a little bit annoying to step over it, but it will keep water from flooding the basement.
When does the stripper pole go in? (El Guapo)
